Agrivoltaics in Europe: Solving the Land–Energy Dilemma

Across Europe, the race to transition to green energy increasingly collides with land-use constraints, agricultural priorities, and slow permitting processes. Solar energy is essential for meeting growing electricity demand driven by electrification, but large-scale deployment often faces resistance due to land availability and public acceptance.

Agrivoltaics offers a practical way forward.

By combining photovoltaic energy generation with agricultural production on the same land, AgriPV enables dual land use: a solar energy generating field & a farmland.

Beyond energy, it can improve water management, support crop resilience, and strengthen rural economies.

This shift—from competition to coexistence—is where the next phase of solar development is happening.


AESOLAR, a photovoltaic manufacturer with German headquarters, has taken a focused approach to advancing AgriPV through both technology development and real-world validation.


1 MW AgriPV Project in Europe

In Europe, AESOLAR together with Energia Pomorze Sp. z o.o. is currently testing a 1 MW agriPV pilot project in Poland, where high-transparency Terra E modules are deployed across active farmland. The project aims to study crop performance, water efficiency, and microclimate under controlled shading—while generating around 1,000 MWh of clean energy annually.

AgriPV in extreme climates – food and energy resilience

In parallel, in the UAE, AESOLAR partnered with the Fujairah Research Centre to test agrivoltaics under extreme desert conditions, where temperatures exceed 40°C and water scarcity is critical.

Beyond reliable energy generation, the system demonstrated clear agronomic benefits: the shading from the solar modules significantly reduced heat stress and created a stable microclimate that enabled plant survival during periods when open-field cultivation was not possible.

Soil under the panels showed 20–30% lower salinity, higher moisture retention, and improved organic content, while native crops grew more vigorously, remained greener, and showed greater resilience. These results also showed extended growing periods (ca. 1 month longer growing period). This project was a one-of-a-kind pilot project, and proved to be a scalable solution for sustainable agriculture in arid regions: delivering both clean energy and measurable agricultural value.

German engineering – a special agriPV product line

Complementing the agrivoltaics projects, AESOLAR has developed the TERRA module series for AgriPV use. Terra V PV module for vertical installations:


Terra V: Vertical Solar, Reimagined for Real-World Constraints

AESOLAR’s Terra V solar module brings a new level of flexibility to solar installations. Its compact design allows for vertical mounting, making clean energy generation possible even in space-constrained or unconventional environments such as agricultural fields, solar fences, and noise barriers.

The Terra V solar module addresses key challenges typically associated with vertical installations- such as high wind and snow loads and reduced rear-side energy capture.

Due to it’s special cell layout & design, Terra V brings:

  • Up to 75% lower fracture probability (validated by Fraunhofer)
  • Improved bifacial performance compared to traditional modules when installed vertically
  • Optimized durability, designed to withstand demanding environmental conditions


Terra E: Semi-transparent solar modules – power your greenhouses

Complementing vertical solutions, AESOLAR’s Terra E modules are designed to integrate solar directly into agricultural environments.

These modules have special design with up to 40% transparency: this allows sufficient light for plant growth while generating energy; supporting both productivity and sustainability. Terra E modules are suited for a range of agricultural applications:

  • Greenhouses: Power operations while maintaining optimal light for crops
  • Vineyards & orchards: Provide controlled shading to improve crop quality
  • Open-field farming: Help reduce heat stress, water evaporation, and support a more stable microclimate
