AE Faces | Episode 15: Nelson Saldarriaga – Listening His Way Into Solar
AE Faces_Nelson (2).jpg

If you ever cross paths with Nelson at AESOLAR booth, you’ll notice something immediately: he listens first.

Before the product talk, before the numbers, before the handshake—Nelson is fully present, genuinely curious about the person standing in front of him. In a world that often rushes toward results, this calm, grounded energy feels almost rare. And perhaps that is what makes his journey at AESOLAR so compelling: his career is built not on noise, but on attention.

A Quiet Voice With a Clear Purpose

Nelson describes himself as “naturalmente tranquilo”—a calm observer, a patient learner, and someone who finds meaning in understanding different perspectives. With a background in mechanical engineering and experience in both maintenance and sales, he didn’t enter clean energy by accident; he entered because it felt purposeful.

Two years ago, he joined AESOLAR as the Sales Manager for Hispanic American countries, taking on the ambitious challenge of growing the brand and strengthening its reputation in the region.

What drew him in?

The chance to contribute to something larger than himself. “Working in clean energy gives you a deeper sense of responsibility,” he explains. “It feels good knowing that what we promote helps create a better world.”

It was not an easy transition—moving from previous administrative and commercial roles into photovoltaics—but he wasn’t alone. Nelson speaks with heartfelt gratitude about a friend and mentor Jose Montoya, someone who guided him from day one, sharing expertise and offering encouragement when everything in this new industry felt unfamiliar. Those early lessons, he says, shaped not just his career path, but his character inside AESOLAR.

Relationships First, Always

What defines Nelson’s work is not simply selling solar modules—it’s creating human connection across cultures.

Whether in Colombia, Peru, Mexico, or Chile, he brings the warmth of Latin American culture into every conversation. “Where I come from, relationships matter,” he says. “We value trust, closeness, and genuine dialogue.”

He brings this philosophy into negotiations too:

listen carefully, respect opinions, build arguments with clarity, and always value the other person.

Solar exhibitions, he says, are his favorite part of the job. The energy, the conversations, the cultural mix—he thrives in these environments. He sees each event not as a commercial battlefield, but as an exchange of ideas. Visitors arrive with expectations, questions, ambitions. Nelson enjoys meeting those needs, but equally enjoys learning from their experiences.

“It’s the people,” he says. “Different cultures, different approaches, different stories—every conversation teaches me something new.”

The Life That Recharges Him

Even the best connectors need time to reconnect with themselves.

For Nelson, that happens in nature.

On weekends, he escapes with his wife—into forests, mountains, and quiet trails where phone signals fade and the mind can slow down. Trekking, mountain biking, and photography are his three anchors.

Photography, especially, is more than a hobby. It’s another form of listening: observing landscapes, capturing moments, paying attention to what others might overlook. His camera roll is a catalog of mountains, sunbeams, quiet lakes, shadows between trees. In many ways, these images mirror the way he approaches people—patiently, respectfully, with an eye for meaning.

A Philosophy of Growth

If he could speak to his younger self on his first day at AESOLAR, his advice would be simple:

“Don’t be afraid of rejection.

If they’re listening, you’re already changing the world.”

It is not bravado. It is perspective.

Nelson believes that promoting clean energy is already a step toward collective progress. Each meeting, each call, each negotiation—no matter the outcome—pushes the region toward a more sustainable future.

His three words to describe himself—patient, sociable, humble—are not marketing phrases. They genuinely reflect the way he moves through life and work. And they explain why he has become a respected presence in AESOLAR’s Hispanic American markets.

Looking Back, Looking Forward

If Nelson could speak to his younger self on day one at AESOLAR, he would offer a gentle reminder:

“Don’t fear rejection. The fact that someone is listening already means progress — for you, for them, and for the clean energy mission we share.”

As for the qualities he carries today — patience, sociability, humility — they form the backbone of the trust he builds across borders.

Through every conversation, every partnership, every new connection, Nelson shows that clean energy is not only a technical movement — it is a human one.

And in that world, he shines naturally.
