How much electricity does Europe need in 2024?

As Europe continues to electrify its industries and households, the demand for electricity has seen a notable increase in 2024. According to the latest data from Ember Energy, electricity demand across the EU 27 is forecasted to reach approximately 3,284.8 Terawatt-hours (TWh), a modest year-on-year increase of 1.21%. This is indicative of the growing demand driven by the increasing electrification of sectors like transport, heating, and industrial processes.

In terms of country-specific data, nations like Germany and France are seeing a slight decline in their electricity demand with a decrease of 0.7% and 0.1%, respectively, due to improvements in energy efficiency and a higher share of renewables in the energy mix. On the other hand, countries like Denmark (6.5%) and Greece (6.2%) are witnessing more substantial increases, reflecting rapid urbanization and industrial development that is driving up their consumption.

This growing electricity demand, combined with the EU’s ambitious Net-Zero targets, underscores the urgent need to both increase supply and reduce carbon emissions.

Connection to the Recent Power Outage in Spain and Portugal

The increased demand for electricity is also being driven by the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), the expansion of digital infrastructure, and greater energy consumption in buildings as part of the green transition. The recent large-scale power outage in Spain and Portugal serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in our energy infrastructure. On April 28, 2025, a shuttle down of grids across both countries, plunging millions of residents and businesses into darkness.

With electricity demand on the rise, outdated and underprepared grid infrastructure becomes a major concern. To mitigate the risk of such disruptions, we need to diversify our energy generation sources, increase energy independence, and rapidly transition towards renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. Strengthening the grid with decentralized renewable energy solutions will not only reduce the reliance on traditional fossil-fuel-based power plants but also make the grid more resistant to disruptions caused by external threats, like cyberattacks.

The Role of Solar Energy in Meeting Growing Demand

As Europe’s electricity demand continues to grow, from the growing use of electric vehicles to the widespread adoption of smart homes and industrial automation, the shift towards electrification is inevitable, so does the urgency to transition to more sustainable energy solutions. Renewable energy is emerging as the key solution to both meet these rising needs and combat climate change. The EU’s commitment to decarbonizing the electricity sector by 2050, paired with its renewable energy targets, has spurred massive investments in solar infrastructure. By 2025, countries like Germany and Italy aim to have at least 50% of their electricity generated by renewable sources, with solar energy contributing a significant portion of that total.

Solar energy offers several benefits over traditional fossil fuels. It is cost-effective, scalable, and quick to deploy, making it one of the easiest renewable energy sources to implement in both residential and commercial settings, making them a preferred solution for meeting growing electricity demand while reducing emissions.
